1. Population Density

Alpharetta and Milton sit right next to each other, but they feel completely different.

  • Alpharetta: ~67,000 people across 27 square miles (~2,480 people per sq. mile)

  • Milton: ~43,000 people across 38 square miles (~1,130 people per sq. mile)

Alpharetta feels active — corporate campuses, busy shopping districts, and neighborhoods closer together, especially near Avalon and downtown.

Milton was intentionally designed to stay rural. You’ll see horse farms, rolling pastureland, and estate homes on multi-acre lots.

If you want space and privacy, Milton is hard to beat.

Winner: Milton 🏆

2. Downtown vs Downtown

Alpharetta’s downtown is one of the best in Metro Atlanta. Walkable streets, chef-driven restaurants, boutique shops, rooftop bars — and constant events. Spots like South Main Kitchen, Citizen Soul, and Restaurant Holmes have made it a legit dining destination. Add in Avalon just minutes away, and you’ve got an all-day experience.

Milton doesn’t have a traditional downtown — by design. Instead, you get Crabapple Market, a charming mixed-use area with restaurants, small shops, and community events. It’s intimate and upscale, but much quieter.

If you want energy and walkability, Alpharetta clearly pulls ahead.

Winner: Alpharetta 🏆

3. Location

Alpharetta sits directly on GA-400 — the main north-south corridor connecting North Fulton to the city. That means easier access to Roswell, Sandy Springs, Buckhead, and Midtown. Airport runs are about 45 minutes without traffic.

Milton sits just west of GA-400. You’re still close to everything, but daily life often means driving through Alpharetta first. That can add time to commutes.

For convenience and quicker regional access:

Winner: Alpharetta 🏆

4. Home Prices

As of fall 2025:

  • Alpharetta median: just under $700,000

  • Milton median: just under $1.3 million

Alpharetta offers more variety — townhomes, smaller-lot homes, golf communities, and luxury estates. Milton specializes in large custom homes on one to several acres.

If you want flexibility and more price points, Alpharetta wins. If you want land and luxury estates, Milton delivers — at a premium.

For overall accessibility and options:

Winner: Alpharetta 🏆

5. Healthcare

Alpharetta has a clear edge here.

You’ve got the Northside/Alpharetta Medical Campus nearby, plus easy access to:

  • Northside Hospital Atlanta

  • Northside Hospital Forsyth

  • Emory Johns Creek Hospital

  • Wellstar North Fulton Medical Center

Milton residents typically drive into Alpharetta or Roswell for hospital care.

7. Safety

This one isn’t close statistically.

You’ve got Downtown events, Avalon shopping and concerts, and major performances at Ameris Bank Amphitheatre. Outdoor lovers enjoy the Big Creek Greenway and Wills Park.
